Podcasting on Long Island! "Apple's iPod has spawned a new media --the podcast. Never before has the audience (you) been able to have the content they want, when they want it, where they want it and how they want it. Welcome to the future of communications and the "now" of entertainment!

Podcasting is the distribution of audio or video files, radio programs, music files and videos over the Internet. You, the audience, can download the files to your PC (personal computer) or your mobil device such as that very well known ipod from Apple.

The term podcast can be a noun: the content downloaded or a verb: the act of delivering and receiving the content. Some podcasters offer direct download of files such as .MP3 files but the "subscription feed" that is automatically delivered distinguishes a podcast from a simple download or stream. Usually, a podcast features one type of "show" with new episodes either sporadically or daily, weekly, etc. Content can be music, hot topic discussion shows, news, advice, talk radio and the latest craze -religion. That's right "Godcasting" has hit the world. It seems that preachers of many faiths, ever on the cutting edge of technology, are casting their weekly sermons. No need to get up on Sunday anymore - Yeah!

But seriously, now Anyone can record their own show and broadcast it to the public. All you really need is a microphone and some digital recording software (and a dream) and bang you're a DJ. It's do it yourself radio. The word "Podcasting" comes from two words: "iPod" and "broadcasting". Someone put them together and the rest is pod history (podstory). the iPod was simply the most marketed and the best-selling portable digital player on the market when the concept of podcasting started. If it were Sony we'd be calling it Socasting, xboxcasting? Panacasting?

Not one of the 4 million people who have an ipod? No worries, you can download and play a podcast on your PC speakers. In fact, latest data indicates that 80% of podcasts never make it to a portable device but are listened to right from the PC. (this from TDG Research).
